Step out of a car that has been baking in the sun and the first thing you touch is a scalding steering wheel. This umbrella-style windshield sun shade sets up in seconds and folds down small enough to live in your door pocket — so you actually use it every time you park.

Opens like an umbrella, not like a folding screen

Accordion shades have to be wrestled open and wedged behind the visors. This one works like the umbrella in your trunk: pull the ribs apart, open it against the windshield, and drop the visors to hold it in place. Same motion to close it. No suction cups, no creasing, nothing to peel off the glass.

The reflective silver side faces the sun

The outer layer is a silver reflective coating that bounces sunlight back out through the glass instead of letting it soak into your dashboard. The inner side is black, so it does not glare back at you from inside the cabin. On a hot day you will notice it most on the two surfaces you touch first — the steering wheel and the dashboard.

A ten rib frame that keeps its shape

  • 10 ribs — a dense frame that keeps the canopy bowed and pressed up against the glass instead of sagging away from it.

The canopy unfolds to about 57 x 31 in (140 x 80 cm), which covers the windshield of most sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs and vans. Folded, it is roughly the size of a compact umbrella, and the included sleeve keeps it tidy in a door pocket, the gap by the door handle, or the glovebox.

How to use it

  1. Hold the centre handle and let the canopy open out.
  2. Push it up against the inside of the windshield.
  3. Fold both sun visors down to hold it in place.
  4. To pack up, lift the visors and let the canopy close, then slide it into the sleeve.
